What makes you think of fall? Delicious smelling candles, hot apple cider, cozy blankets, picking pumpkins with friends, sitting around the Thanksgiving table having good conversations, or the fireplace crackling? Any of those remind you of this season and put a smile on your face? Well then, this list of hygge worthy fall decor for your home is perfect for you.
First and foremost, in case you’ve never heard of the Danish word Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) here is a little more information. Hygge is a way of life in Denmark, one of the happiest countries in the world. It is part of their culture and more of a mindset to the Danes. The word originates from a Norwegian word meaning “well-being” and is more about atmosphere and experiences than actual things. Hygge is most commonly described as coziness. It’s about feeling safe or content, being with loved ones and enjoying simple pleasures. Things that are very hygge and create that feeling are dim lighting, especially candles or fires, blankets, hot drinks, comfort food, books and good conversations all surrounded with people you love most. All of these things make me think of fall and the upcoming holidays so here are some options for hygge worthy fall decor for your home.
COZY
One of my favorite ways to bring in fall colors and warmth for the colder weather is by adding pillows and throws. I like using textures, especially velvet and faux fur, because they add to the cozy vibes. Year-round I use a lot of neutral colors, like gold and white, so it makes it easy to just add a beautiful rusty orange or brown fur. The pillows below are just covers so you would need to buy the inserts, which you can easily find online or at a craft store. This makes it easier to change pillows throughout the year without the expense of a whole pillow and usually makes it easier to wash.

Using different textures also gives off a homey cozy feel, especially natural ones like wood and cotton. Hygge is also about appreciating nature and using a neutral calming palette. Baskets are great for throws or for plants and what’s cozier than a hot beverage in a cute mug? This wreath would be great to add floral picks to and change throughout the seasons too.

LIGHTING
I love lighting. You see glowing decor often from me. It can easily transform a space and can make things feel romantic, cozy, and relaxing. Twinkle lights, candles, and fairy/led lights are my favorite ways to bring in warmth and sparkle. These lanterns and mercury glass votive holders would be easy to use for all seasons.

Woodwick candles are my absolute favorite. They are the epitome of hygge worthy fall decor because they crackle like a fireplace when lit. This wreath, like the other, would look great alone or with added fake foliage. Gold candlesticks add such a romantic feel even when not lit. You can also find them at antique stores usually. These pumpkins are stunning too. The natural colors also allow you to get more creative with other things a fun table runner or other decor if you wanted.

AROUND THE TABLE
Bringing people together is one of my favorite things to do. Any excuse to decorate, have a theme, eat good food, and be surrounded by my people is right up my alley. I love all the little details of creating an environment for my loved ones to enjoy and escape the normal day-to-day.
I already have a cream tablecloth with a little gold in it and a china set of dishes similar to these from my great grandmother so I wanted to get things to go well with that. You can find great linens at Hobby Lobby, TJMaxx or similar stores around the holidays. These leaf placemats would look cool as a table runner or on a buffet table if you didn’t want them as traditional placemats. Pumpkin plates are so cute and these ones are salad size so they could easily be part of your table setting. I also like to use traditional table runners on my coffee table if you are looking to mix up some items you already have. Napkins with a little something extra like pom poms or fringe always steal my attention. Both of the ones below come in other colors.

Name cards aren’t always necessary but I love the extra detail. These leaves are too cute and they have pumpkins as well. Writing on a mini pumpkin or using velvet ribbon on a tag like this would also look great. This platter is from the Spode Woodland collection. It is expensive china but they are pieces to last a lifetime. I find myself investing in items like this that I know I will be able to use forever and pass down in my family. This line has a lot of gorgeous pieces with other animals like buffalo, deer, and even a labrador retriever. Pampas grass is trendy and I am here for it! It is the perfect foliage for any season but especially fall. Tip – if the grass is making it “snow” everywhere – hair spray it. Complete your table with pumpkin wine glasses and a punch bowl to match!
